Phoenix
Phoenix is the 34-minute rock opera by Canadian Veteran Bruce Callow.
“A modern parable of healing—reminding us to focus on what unites us, not what divides us.”
Phoenix tells the story of a Canadian Army Reservist, Adam, who served on the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Croatia in 1993 (Medak Pocket)and the silent war that followed him home. Though fictional, the film draws on real experiences. Haunted by memory and drifting across both physical and psychological landscapes, he reaches a breaking point but ultimately finds a path toward renewal.
With a dreamlike visual style, Phoenix unfolds as an immersive, emotionally driven journey where memory, emotion, and music merge. Each song functions as a chapter in Adam’s inner world. It is a film about what war can leave behind and what it takes to rise again.
The songs featured in Phoenix were written by Bruce Callow and first recorded as demos or released independently between 1986 and 2025. With the advent of new music production technologies, it became possible to finally produce them at a professional level.
Bruce re-recorded the vocals in a home studio with his son, Kenneth Callow. During this process, a narrative thread began to emerge across the songs, evolving into the story that became Phoenix with the film being animated by Kenneth.
Bruce briefly served with the Canadian Army Reserves in 1983, and while he pursued a different career path, he continued to follow Canadian military affairs closely, including the deployment of Reserve soldiers in the former Yugoslavia in the early 1990s.
Phoenix contributes to the ongoing efforts of many organizations to raise awareness of the challenges that veterans continue to face. The film is finding an audience in artistic and academic spaces, as well as within the veteran community and has helped support fundraising for veteran organizations.
